In the world of returnable packaging, Tosca is known for 'thinking outside of the box'.  In fact, Tosca is frequently approached by both existing and potential customers to help evaluate and to implement new returnable applications within their businesses.

 

The case of a leading company in the Commercial Pizza industry illustrates this point to perfection.  Manufacturing operations were experiencing excessive product damage resulting from the use of an inefficient 'pallet & sleeve' unit load system for internal handling tasks. They sought an alternative method for the movement, and short-term 'holding' of work-in-process Pizza Crust, and asked for Tosca's assistance in this effort.
 
The solution of choice to satisfy these dual requirements was a plastic Bulk Bin.  The selection of a Bulk Bin was justified by the total system savings that it offered, and was not primarily based on substitution savings from decreased packaging costs.

 

Commitment to this innovative returnable container project persuaded the Commercial Pizza manufacturer to purchase a fleet of Bulk Bins.  Initially, the company chose to create an in-house management program for the new assets.  Tosca Limited, already a valued partner in the 640 Container pool, was contracted to provide cleaning and sanitation services for the Pizza Bulk Bin fleet, as well. 

For Tosca, taking on the Bulk Bin contract demanded substantial investments in sortation, repair, and wash technology.  Active engagement of every member of Tosca's operating Teams was crucial.  Working in conjunction with the customer's Quality Control managers, Tosca's inspection, cleaning, and sanitizing protocols were developed, and a service schedule was implemented.  Bulk Bins require assisted handling, unique repair techniques, and specialized wash technology. Thus Tosca's Custom Solution Development, Repair, and Clean Teams collaborated with equipment vendors to design and install new systems.  By acquiring appropriate technology, and by empowering dedicated teams to service the account, Tosca delivered both consistent throughput, and quality.
