What is the PPWR?
The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation
is a new EU-wide initiative that overhauls packaging legislation to address the environmental impact of packaging waste. For the first time, the regulation puts reuse ahead of recycling, prioritising packaging systems that reduce waste at the source.
It also introduces Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)
requiring producers to take financial responsibility for the waste their packaging generates. Importantly, reusable packaging is typically exempt from EPR fees, making it a compelling option for businesses looking to manage compliance costs.
