ATLANTA—February 26, 2018—With the ongoing focus on more rigorous food safety measures by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Tosca announced today that all 14 of its service centers nationwide have proactively achieved third-party certification to one of the world’s most stringent food safety management standards.

That standard, known as ISO 22000 and developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), ensures that companies operating in the food supply chain provide food and packaging that is safe for human consumption. ISO 22000 was chosen over other standards because of the rigors of the standard, the flexibility of the standard to meet business growth, and the robustness of the standard to address potential food safety concerns and customer demands. By meeting the requirements of the ISO 22000 standard, Tosca has implemented a food safety management system that follows a number of rigorous practices and procedures like the ones below:

HACCP plans which asses potential hazards and identify critical process controls that are continually monitored

Laboratory analysis to assess biological hazards via Aerobic Plate Count, Listeria and air and water sampling

Individual RPC traceability of wash date via digital tracking

Biosecurity measures to prevent cross contamination

In addition to providing food safe packaging to the supply chain, the ISO standards will allow Tosca to standardize processes across wash sites and identify opportunities for continual improvement.

“We want to reassure our customers—and our customers’ customers—that we take food safety very seriously,” says Tosca president Eric Frank. “As an integral part of the food supply chain, food safety is an utmost priority. We thought certification to a globally recognized standard was an important step for us to take, so we pledged to achieve ISO 22000 standard at every service center we own and operate in the country. While it’s been a multi-year journey, it’s a tangible way to demonstrate our commitment to providing food-safe reusable packaging for the perishable food supply chain.”

“For more than 18 years, Tosca has managed more than 500 million issues of RPCs, and there has never been a food safety recall associated with RPC use,” says Mike Wasson, vice president of supply chain and operations. “Additionally, for more than a decade, two leading grocery retailers have trusted Tosca RPCs to transport food safely and securely along the supply chain. That, is a testament to Tosca’s reliability.”

In addition to ensuring internal best practices are achieved, two of Tosca’s food safety experts helped draft the Reusable Packaging Association’s new industry Guidelines and Best Practices for the Safe Use of Returnable Containers in Food Supply Chains, to “collectively insure a safe and wholesome food supply chain by users and suppliers of reusable containers.”
